China

China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of iron ore. The average of iron ore production in China is about 1.3 billion tons per year, and this constitutes about 44% of the global production of iron. China often extracts iron ore from Hebei and Liaoning. There are some other places where iron can be extracted, like Beijing, Shanxi and parts of Mongolia.

Australia

Australia is the world’s second largest producer of iron ore and it is its largest exporter. Iron ore is mainly located in Western Australia in Bilbara, where it accounts for 95% of iron production ore in Australia. The country produces about 800 million tons per year, and this constitutes about 20% of the global production.

Brazil

Brazil is the third largest iron ore producer in the world. Brazil produces about 420 million tons per year, and this makes up about 12% of the global production. Brazil has the second largest amount of iron ore in the world. Iron is mainly mined in Minas Gerais and Pará. Brazil has the largest iron mine in the world, which is the Carajás mine.

India

India was one of the largest iron producers in the past, but it is now in fourth place after China, Australia and Brazil. India produces 95% of its total iron in Orissa, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Goa and Karnataka. India produces about 129 million tons of iron per year.

Russia

Russia is the fifth largest producer of iron ore in the world. It produces about 100 million tons per year. Most of the Russian iron ore is located in central Russia and is also found in Siberia and the Urals.
